Look for changes in the moles. The ABCD system of the American Cancer Society is very easy to understand.

A-Asymmetry. One half doesn't match the other half.

B-Border irregularity, with ragged, notched, or blurred edges.

C- Color. The pigmentation is not uniform. Shades of tan, brown, and black are present. Changes in colour distribution, especially the spread of colour from the edge of a mole into the surrounding skin, also are an early sign of melanoma.

D-Diameter. The mole or skin growth is larger than 6 mm (0.2 in.).

Any other change in the appearance of an existing mole should be looked into for a possibility of Melanoma. Thickening or raising of a previously flat mole, scaling, erosion, oozing, bleeding, or crusting of the mole surface, redness, swelling, etc. in the surrounding skin or sensations, such as itching, tingling, or burning and friability of the mole are symptoms of melanoma. As melanoma grows, the symptoms such as bleeding from a mole or pain may appear.

A melanoma which has begun to spread may include- swollen lymph nodes, colourless lump or thickening under the skin, unexplained weight loss and melanosis(graying skin). These symptoms are not conclusive and are manifested in many other conditions.

Graying of the skin (melanosis). Many other conditions have symptoms similar to melanoma.

Detecting skin cancer in its earliest stages not only significantly increases the patient's chance of making a full recovery, it can also save the patient from having to go through aggressive treatments which can have severe side effects. The key to early detection is in finding skin irregularities and recognizing them as possible skin tumors, and promptly having them examined by a doctor. Some background information along with skin cancer photos can help you recognize what symptoms to look for.

Skin cancer is much more likely to be detected within its earliest stages of development if the patient has taken an active part in the process. You need to perform regular skin self-examinations, searching every part of your body for any irregularities with a basic idea of what you need to be looking for. If you find any suspicious growths, you can visit a doctor for professional evaluation.

The symptoms you need to look for vary in cases of melanoma or nonmelanoma skin cancer. You need to be especially attentive to the possibility of developing melanoma if you have certain risk factors, such as a higher than average number of nevi, or moles, or a high number of dysplastic nevi.

Dysplastic nevi are moles with an unusual appearance. They may be asymmetrical or particularly large. If you have any of these risk factors, you may want to ask a doctor for help in watching for an increase in the number of moles you have or any changes in their condition. After an initial evaluation, you may want to check regularly with a doctor. Even if you don't have an unusually high number of moles or dysplastic nevi, you should still watch for new moles or changes in existing moles when you do your skin examination.

New dysplastic nevi should be seen by a doctor. If an existing mole changes in size, shape, or color, or if irritation or any color change occurs in the bordering skin, you should consult a doctor.

Moles are usually benign growths and most people have between 10 and 40 of them. They are formed of the same melanocyte cells which can turn into skin cancer, so moles do need to be watched carefully for any changes.

Nonmelanoma skin cancer generally affects the basal or squamous cells which make up the epidermis. These types of skin cancer can be less striking in appearance than melanoma, and are less severe, but early detection is still extremely important. While nonmelanoma skin cancer is most common on the face and other parts of the body which are exposed to sunlight, the entire body should be checked for symptoms.

Symptoms may appear as small lumps, which may be red or flesh-toned, or as sores or rashes which do not heal on their own. Any sores or rashes found during a skin examination should be watched carefully to see if they're healing, and if they aren't, this means a doctor should be consulted.

Skin cancer photos can be a useful aid in helping you determine what skin irregularities warrant a visit to a doctor, but should not be used as an exclusive guide for self-diagnosis. Do regular self-examinations, use the information provided in addition to photos, and see a doctor for any irregularity that you can't identify, because even if it isn't skin cancer, it may require medical attention.

When unexpected rashes appear, many people ask, “Can I diagnose my skin rash at home?” Only a qualified doctor or health professional can give you a real diagnosis, but if your rash is mild and not causing a severe problem, then you may find it helpful to take a moment to think about where the rash might have come from.

Though home “diagnosis” is no substitute for qualified medical care, it can sometimes help you to figure out what may have contributed to your problem. A careful examination of your recent life changes from all angles may be able to help you find the cause of your rash.

When a skin rash recently popped up on my arm, I took the time to look at every change I had made in life at that time. These changes included the food I ate, drinks I consumed, new skin care or personal care products I may have used, and stress that wreaked havoc on my life recently. What I found was a link between these changes and the appearance of the rash on my arm!

Foods and Skin Breakouts

Trying new and exciting foods can be a great way to have fun at the end of the day. But, when adding new foods to your diet, there is a chance you will come in contact with a food you may have an allergic reaction to.

This reaction can appear as a rash on the skin. The reaction may take days to develop, so I wrote down all the foods I had eaten in the previous week when I chose to diagnose my skin rash at home.

Drinks and Skin Breakouts

Along the same lines, food allergies are not limited to foods you eat. Drinks often contain fruit juices that can also cause a skin reaction. The most common allergen in drinks is strawberries, but other juices like apple, orange and lemon may also be to blame. Noting any new drinks you may have consumed either at home, in a restaurant or at a friend's house can help to open your eyes to the possible cause for the breakout.

Chemicals in Your Personal Care Products

Some chemicals and preservatives that are used in shampoos, toothpastes, skin care products and cosmetics can also cause skin, eye or lung irritation. Luckily I am somewhat aware of these issues and I do not use products with parabens, fragrance and other irritants. I had not tried any new products in the past week, so that was likely not the cause of my skin rash.

Stress and the Skin

Many people suffer from stress and I am not immune. The week before my breakout, I was hit with some family changes that caused a large amount of stress. Stress is one of the most common causes of immune system disturbance that can lead to skin changes. I made note of this as I was looking for possible causes for my skin rash.

Making Sense of All This Information

Once I noted all the changes that occurred over the last week, I found no food or drinks that were new to my diet. The inevitable cause of my breakout was the stress factor. Understanding the cause of my skin changes led me to several options for healing the condition.

Alternative therapies like stress relieving exercises and massage therapy topped my list. I needed to find new ways to channel my energies instead of allowing the stress to take over my life.

Breathing exercises helped a lot, and the massage therapy was not to shabby on the mind (or body) either! Other alternative therapies can include yoga, acupuncture, or natural skin lotions to topically treat any itching or swelling associated with the rash.

I was truly skeptical when I began the journey to diagnose my skin rash on my own, but found the process to be simple and educational. Of course, if you have a more serious or more chronic skin rash that lasts for more than a day a two, please seek advice from a doctor or qualified health practitioner. I wish you health and radiant skin!

A squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer is a type of skin cancer that usually results from a long term sun damage or exposure to ultra-violet rays to the skin. Squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer spreads gradually and also has the capacity to spread to tissues near the affected area such as the eye. The cancer can also spread to distant parts of the body in case, it is not treated on time.

The best and the only way to make sure if a skin growth is cancerous is to go for a biopsy. The process involves removal of a small section of the skin. Thereafter a pathologist analyzes it under the microscope in a medical laboratory.

Remember that a biopsy is not a process to remove cancer. It just works towards taking off the tip of the cancer.

In some cases the skin tends to heal once the biopsy is done as it grows over the cancer. However, this does not indicate that the cancer is removed completely. Here, the cancer is only covered with a blanket of skin. In case, the cancer is not removed fully, it can get deeper in to the skin and even metastasize to the internal organs of the body resulting in death of a human being.

Squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer is known to be one of the most common forms of skin cancer. It is shocking but true that over 25,000 new cases have been reported in a year in the United States alone. The cancer originates from the squamous cells that are most of the portion of the upper layer of the skin.

All cases of squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer are not serious. If detected early and treated promptly, one can easily survive this disease. However, if not treated properly, the disease can prove to be very hard to treat and can even result in disfigurement.

There are several causes of the origination of squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer. Some of these include the following:

i)Frequent and long exposure to harmful sun rays. This result in severe skin damage and ultimately develop in to squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer.

ii)The damage to the skin done by sun is the most responsible factor for development of this type of cancer. The face is most exposed to sun and the cancer spreads to the other parts of the body.

iii)Light skinned people have greater risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer.

iv)People who have already developed this cancer are said to develop more.

Chronic exposure to the sun is the main cause of this type of cancer. The tumor invades to body parts such as face, neck, bald scalp, hands, shoulders, arms and back that are more exposed to sun. The lower lip and the rim of the ear are more vulnerable to these cancers.

Squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer may also develop due to certain types of injury such as scars, burns, long existing sores, sites exposed to X-rays or some harmful chemicals, such as arsenic of by-products of petroleum. Reduced immunity is also one of the main reasons for the spread of this type of cancer. Detect and treat early to stay away from possible damage and full recovery.

Everyone is at risk to develop skin cancer. Recent publication of new research has raised concern about those of us who spend a great deal of our time outside in the sun for fun or work. Dr. Darrell Rigel of New York University looked at a select group of adults with out door summer jobs three years in a row.

The staggering news was that we are 5 to 20 times more likely to develop melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer, with more and more time in the sun. They were able to identify six risk factors that led to greater sun exposure and greater risk of skin cancer. It is very simple. The more of these risk factors you have the greater the risk.

Risk factors that the study identified were:

1. An outdoor summer job.
2. History of blistering sunburn
3. Having naturally red or blond hair
4. Freckling of the upper back
5. Personal history of previous melanoma
6. History of actinic keratosis

The study participants were 18 to 70 years of age, a good sampling across a broad range. Having fair skin or a past history of two or more episodes of blistering sunburn confirm our previous understanding of how those innocent events lead to greater risk of skin cancer. Actinic keratosis is a form of sun damaged skin that can be a precancerous condition. The skin remembers or accumulates sun damage over a lifetime in many small installments. The average lifetime risk of developing a melanoma is relatively low at 1.5%.

Having even one of these risk factors increased the odds by more than twice to 3-5%. Dr Rigel's study actually looked at over 40 risk factors but these six were the only ones that correlated closely with more frequent skin cancer. An interesting note is that age alone without a history of excessive sun exposure was not a risk factor. Editorial comments by Dr Rigel summarized that the real risks are simply “genetic susceptibility and exposure to ultraviolet light”.

These findings emphasize the need for preventive measures when spending time outdoors. Liberal and frequent use of sunscreens and appropriate clothing to minimize the damaging effects of excessive sun exposure is critical. In the future there may be other more sophisticated ways to decrease our susceptibility. For now basic common sense and consistent use of inexpensive tools like sunscreens and sun block can make the difference in a life free of skin cancer.

As a physician with over thirty years of clinical experience in the fields of general/family practice, occupational medicine, and urgent care, I have an interest in promoting healthy living and inspiring people to reach their life goals.

“The Owner's Manual for Allergy Relief” is intended to be a primer for people who struggle with allergy issues. This is the first of a series of concise Owner's Manuals with practical tips for healthy living. I've authored a mystery novel “Turnabout by Bruce Kaler M.D.” that follows a surgeon whose life is turned upside down by a wrongful death malpractice lawsuit brought by his vengeful ex-girlfriend.

Trying to get ride of acne usually means a trip to the drug store. There are hundreds of products on the shelves that promise results fast. Most of the products dry the skin to help get rid of the oil that accompanies acne. There is alcohol used in most of these products.

Also, going on line to shop for skin products offers many choices, however, the ones online usually cost even more because they seem to be advertised a lot. It's hard to choose which product you will trust. Some of them may give you side effects, and then you need to go out and try something else. There are some easier ways to try.

One way is to purchase an oily skin foundation make-up. While wearing the make-up will cover the blemish, it will also eliminate some of the oil on the face that causes the problem. There are also make-up powder made to serve the same purpose.

Another easy and free way to stop the blemishes, is using ice cubes. Wrap the cubes in a soft cloth and gently rub over the affected parts of the face. Try it for a couple of minutes, then wait a half hour or so. Then try it again. The pustules should reduce and dry up with the constant use of the cold. At least with this treatment, there won't be any side effects. Just be sure not to overdo it.

Toothpaste has also been tried on problem skin. The white gel-based toothpaste should be applied strictly to the blemishes and kept on for a while. Try this for a few days and see what happens.

Remember what mom used to say. If you eat chocolate, your face will break out. So try to avoid chocolate, and those oily potato chips.

Final Tip: Remember that by researching and comparing the best acne solutions products, you will get the treatment that is right for you. Fortunately, it has been reported the effectiveness of some prescribed medication. Also, there are natural remedies and treatments that are very safe and work to treat your acne without flaw.

When I was about 15, I remember someone telling me that I needed to make sure I removed my makeup every night or I would look 60 by the time I was 30. I didn't really believe her (and it was a bit of an exaggeration) but since then I have become convinced of the importance of removing my makeup each night. But how to go about it? Mascara never comes off, foundation never seems to come off the jawline. Here are some quick steps to make sure you get your face squeaky clean every night.

Make sure you choose your face wash based on your skin type. If cleansers dry out your skin, make sure you get a moisturizing face wash or cleansing oil. This will prevent you from undoing any good the makeup removal would do by drying out your skin. If you have oily skin, use a foaming face wash that will remove the oil.

Waterproof mascara is its own special case. If you use waterproof mascara regularly, invest in a cleanser specifically formulated for that purpose.

Removing foundation is easy with a makeup removing cream. Put it on a clean cotton pad and wipe the entire face, all the way up to the hairline and down to the jawline.

Make sure to remove lipstick. Vaseline will usually take off waterproof lipsticks.

Wash off any lotions or creams used to remove makeup with a clean cleanser. Pat dry.

You shouldn't need to wash your face again in the morning, but if you have a oily sheen on your face the next morning, use warm water to get rid of the oil. This way, you avoid over-drying your skin with too much soap (but don't have to look greasy and gross).

Consistently taking off your makeup before bed will keep your skin looking healthy and vibrant every morning for years to come.

If you are one of the millions suffering from oily skin or oily complexion, good news is here!

Products for oily skin have come a long way in the past decade and ingredients have been shown to effectively regulate skin oil without drying-out your complexion. The result, a cleaner, clearer complexion with less oil, bacteria and inflammation.

Oily skin and complexion are primarily the result of over-active sebaceous glands found in skin pores and follicles. Sebaceous glands secrete oil that is used to keep the skin moist and prevent dryness. Oil helps lubricate and protect facial skin helping maintain softness and suppleness.

Over-active sebaceous glands produce too much oil – an obvious statement, but this can and does leading to many skin problems. First, oily skin can be unsightly and embarrassing. Oily skin aggravates enlarged pores while giving a greasy, unhealthy appearance to your skin and face

Exxcess skin oil can clog pores, trap bacteria and lead to infection, inflammation or even rosacea and acne. Dirt, old skin cells, and bacteria can join and accumulate presenting environmental stress to the skin. Reducing oil can not only leave your skin fresh and clean, but healthy as well.

Oily skin is often hereditary, a circumstance of hormonal changes (as in teenagers or pregnancy) or increased heat and humidity. Common on the face where acne and rosacea breakouts are most prominent, oily skin can be occur anywhere on the body. However, the concentration of skin pores on the forehead and nose is where the highest occurrence of oily skin is found.

Oily skin products usually are found in two basic formulas or solutions. First, oily skin face toners cleanse the skin with ingredients such as Alpha Hydroxy (AHA) and Zinc PCA. Applied with a cotton swab or pad, oily skin toners can wipe away oil, dirt and grime leaving skin cleansed. Toners are often used in conjunction with oily face washes or cleansers to increase effectiveness and produce enhanced results.

Similar to toners, oily face washes utilize ingredients to regulate oil and cleanse but are combined with surfactants and cleansers to wash and remove oil, dirt and bacteria. Although the mission is to regulate oil, stripping skin completely can lead to irritation and inflammation.

Many oily face washes use additional ingredients to help kill bacteria as well as soothe and moisturize the skin without promoting increased oil production.

Oily skin and complexion can be effectively controlled with skin care formulated to regulate oil and to encourage healthy skin. The result can be a clean, clear and oil-free complexion you are proud of.

Do you have a layer of oil formed on your face a short while after you have washed you your face? If yes, it means that you most probably have oily skin.

Oily skin is caused by sebaceous gland producing too much oil, therefore producing thick grease patches on the face. Oily skin occurs most frequently on people in the adolescent age due to shifts in hormonal levels. It can cause great embarrassment and hassle due to shiny patches formed on the face and frequent wiping and washing of the face. As a result, people who experience oily skin problem never fail to find a solution to it. There are several causes of oily skin such as diet, genetic heredity and unsuitable cosmetics. Oily skin leads to undesirable facial problems such as acnes and pimples. However, there are a lot of treatments for oily skin.

Diet, genetic heredity and unsuitable cosmetics can cause oily skin. An unhealthy diet that consists of the intake of too much oily and junk food can be the reason to oily skin. Having an unhealthy diet and lifestyle such as smoking and alcohol prevents the body from functioning in the correct manner. Therefore, the body may produce too much oil and cause oily skin. Genetic heredity plays a role in the cause of oily skin. The trait of oily skin could have been programmed in a person's DNA genetically. If most of a person's family members have oily skin, the person most probably will develop oily skin. Finally, using cosmetics that does not suit a person's skin type is also a reason in causing oily skin. Different people have different skin types. Some people can be allergic to a certain type of cosmetic. For instance, an oil-based cosmetic can aggravate the oily skin condition. In addition, using too much of cosmetics can cause the sebaceous gland to produce too much oil.

Usually, people with oily skin are most likely to develop facial problems such as acnes, pimples and blackheads. Facial oil attracts dirt and dust from the environment, causing adverse effect to the cleanliness of the face. The dirt will cause the skin to develop acnes and pimples. Moreover, facial oil will clog the facial pores and leads to the accumulation of dead skin cells, causing blackheads.

Most importantly, there are several precautions and treatments to counter the problem of oily face. Unhealthy lifestyle and diet should be avoided as it cause skin and health problem. Adopt a healthy diet rich in fruits and water because a good state of health will better ease the oily skin problem. Excessive washing of the face should be avoided as it will stimulate the sebaceous gland to produce more oil. Avoid using cleansing fluid that is too strong. Use milder forms of facial solutions to cleanse the face. The usage of proper skin care products is essential. For instance, facial cream that contains benzoyl peroxide can be useful in eradicating the oily skin problem.

In conclusion, oily skin poses a lot of facial problems and may be affecting a lot of people. Fortunately, there are several ways to reduce and cure oily skin problem. However, although oily skin causes a lot of headache to people who are conscious of their appearance, it also has its advantage. In fact, it is a blessing in disguise. Oily skin ages slower than other skin types. The best solution is to strike a balance between having too oily skin and too dry skin.

At the corporation where I provide healthcare (massage) services to the employees, they have wellness weeks several times a year. One of the things they offer is free skin cancer screenings. However, they are not thorough enough to be confident you are in the clear.

A proper body check done by a dermatologist in the privacy of the office should include EVERYWHERE. This includes the scalp, the bottoms of the feet and between the toes and also your private areas.

What I want to bring to your attention in this article is your feet. More specifically, the bottoms of your feet.

What would normally look like an ordinary mole (smaller than 6mm, even color and shape, flat) on another part of the body like your arm, face, or torso, can be something like melanoma if on the soul of your foot.

I've recently had three clients in the last week have possible melanomas on their feet. One client did have them. In fact, she was the one who brought this to my attention. Here I am, a healthcare professional and in 11 years, this is something I just learned. And believe me, I've seen a lot of feet in those 11 years. Needless to say, I went and checked the bottoms of my feet that day.

Remember, I am not saying that a mole or freckle on the bottom of your foot is cancer, but it's not normal for them to be there (verified by my dermatologist) so if you have any, I would HIGHLY recommend getting it checked out very soon by a dermatologist. Melanomas are the fast growing kind of skin cancer you DON'T want to get as they spread quickly and can be fatal.
