Can I Diagnose My Skin Rash at Home?

March 12, 2010 By: admin Category: skin cancer

When unexpected rashes appear, many people ask, “Can I diagnose my skin rash at home?” Only a qualified doctor or health professional can give you a real diagnosis, but if your rash is mild and not causing a severe problem, then you may find it helpful to take a moment to think about where the rash might have come from.

Though home “diagnosis” is no substitute for qualified medical care, it can sometimes help you to figure out what may have contributed to your problem. A careful examination of your recent life changes from all angles may be able to help you find the cause of your rash.

When a skin rash recently popped up on my arm, I took the time to look at every change I had made in life at that time. These changes included the food I ate, drinks I consumed, new skin care or personal care products I may have used, and stress that wreaked havoc on my life recently. What I found was a link between these changes and the appearance of the rash on my arm!

Foods and Skin Breakouts

Trying new and exciting foods can be a great way to have fun at the end of the day. But, when adding new foods to your diet, there is a chance you will come in contact with a food you may have an allergic reaction to.

This reaction can appear as a rash on the skin. The reaction may take days to develop, so I wrote down all the foods I had eaten in the previous week when I chose to diagnose my skin rash at home.

Drinks and Skin Breakouts

Along the same lines, food allergies are not limited to foods you eat. Drinks often contain fruit juices that can also cause a skin reaction. The most common allergen in drinks is strawberries, but other juices like apple, orange and lemon may also be to blame. Noting any new drinks you may have consumed either at home, in a restaurant or at a friend's house can help to open your eyes to the possible cause for the breakout.

Chemicals in Your Personal Care Products

Some chemicals and preservatives that are used in shampoos, toothpastes, skin care products and cosmetics can also cause skin, eye or lung irritation. Luckily I am somewhat aware of these issues and I do not use products with parabens, fragrance and other irritants. I had not tried any new products in the past week, so that was likely not the cause of my skin rash.

Stress and the Skin

Many people suffer from stress and I am not immune. The week before my breakout, I was hit with some family changes that caused a large amount of stress. Stress is one of the most common causes of immune system disturbance that can lead to skin changes. I made note of this as I was looking for possible causes for my skin rash.

Making Sense of All This Information

Once I noted all the changes that occurred over the last week, I found no food or drinks that were new to my diet. The inevitable cause of my breakout was the stress factor. Understanding the cause of my skin changes led me to several options for healing the condition.

Alternative therapies like stress relieving exercises and massage therapy topped my list. I needed to find new ways to channel my energies instead of allowing the stress to take over my life.

Breathing exercises helped a lot, and the massage therapy was not to shabby on the mind (or body) either! Other alternative therapies can include yoga, acupuncture, or natural skin lotions to topically treat any itching or swelling associated with the rash.

I was truly skeptical when I began the journey to diagnose my skin rash on my own, but found the process to be simple and educational. Of course, if you have a more serious or more chronic skin rash that lasts for more than a day a two, please seek advice from a doctor or qualified health practitioner. I wish you health and radiant skin!
